20.01.2012 The Traffic Signs (amendment) (no 2) Regulations &General Directions 2011

Many changes to the Traffic Signs and General Directions 2002 are included in the forthcoming Amendment Regulations, a 128 page document. Under these, Councils will no longer need special authorisation for many signs. This includes signs to warn lorry drivers of unsuitable roads, the need for which has increased as more and more drivers rely on Satnav systems. Also now part of the Regulations, and therefore not requiring special authorisation, are signs indicating parking spaces for car club and electric vehicle charging points. There are also some new rules to assist with the layout of signs showing variable parking restrictions, which will make it much easier for these to be understood. Other changes allow for contra flow cycle lanes on one-way streets without the need for extensive engineering, and cycle route signs may also now show a time to destination instead of the distance.

10.12.2010 Key Traffic Systems Launches KeyPOST 2.0

Key Traffic Systems launched KeyPOST 1.0 in 2009 to enable users to design sign installations using a simple yet powerful graphical front end and test them, using current standards, against the effects of wind loading and stability. However, the requirements of design have become increasingly complex.  There are a plethora of standards to be adhered to and guidelines to be followed, and users have an ever-increasing need to turn to software to help simplify their processes.
We are now pleased to announce the release of KeyPOST 2.0 which enhances the capabilities of this product to include a greater range of manufacturers' passively safe posts, foundation types and anchorages.  There are more options for control of how posts and foundations are selected automatically for a given sign assembly, compliant with relevant UK and European standards, as well as many other improvements such as the ability to test back-to-back assemblies.
Additionally, KeyPOST now includes interaction with KeySIGN, the market leading sign design program, enabling signs to be exported and tested with KeyPOST and the results exported back to KeySIGN in a quick and simple 'round-trip' process.
All in all, KeyPOST 2.0 helps to streamline the design and testing of sign assemblies while remaining compliant with current standards.

04.01.2010 Road Sign Art: Margaret Calvert works again on road signs

An exciting new art project involving Margaret Calvert, celebrated as the co-designer of our iconic system of road signs, has been facilitated by Buchanan Computing using SignPlot software.

Margaret has teamed up with the well-known illustrator Marion Deuchars to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the M1 motorway with a dissection of one of its signs.

Margaret and Marion have based their work on one of the original cardboard and gouache ‘maquettes’, produced for the Worboys Committee on traffic signs in 1963.  This has been recreated in SignPlot (with a few minor adjustments for historical authenticity) and manufactured using materials appropriate to 1959 by Route Signs Ltd.

Simon Morgan, MD of Buchanan Computing commented, "It has been very exciting to work with Margaret and Marion on this artwork and to gain an understanding of the aesthetic aspects and artistic potential of roadside objects that we usually take for granted."

To see Margaret’s and Marion’s new take on the motorway sign, traffic signing and art aficionados need to visit the If You Could Collaborate exhibition at the A Foundation Gallery in Arnold Circus, London E2 between 15 and 24 January 2010.
