Andrew Pledge (The Passive Revolution)

Our 'Designing Safer Roadsides - Lighting, Signals and Signs' Annual Conference took place on 9th March 2009 at the Telford Theatre and Great Hall at The Institution of Civil Engineers, One Great George Street, London.

As you will see from the event itinerary, we selected a wide ranging list of relevant topics, delivered by a group of excellent presenters to ensure that delegates were able to get the most out of the day. As always, there was an exhibition of the current and very latest available passively safe lighting, signal and signing products and, as with previous events, this exhibition remained an integral part of the itinerary.

We also distributed copies of the consultation draft of the new Guidelines for Use of Passively Safe Street Furniture for Non Trunk roads prepared by David Milne for The Passive Revolution. Details of the contents of this document can be found here.

We would also like to draw your attention to a very recent article (click here to view) that appears in the December issue of TEC magazine, explaining why we have decided to take the unprecedented step of preparing these guidelines, following the loss of TA 89 from the HAs DMRB and the lack of awareness, and indeed, lack of permitted content of the UK National Annexe to EN 12767 due to CEN rules.

In addition, we also provided delegates with a complimentary copy of Designing Safer Roadsides A Handbook for Highway Engineers edited by David Milne and published by TEC magazine (cover price 45.00).

30.09.2009 Traffic Sign design 2009 Core training for Engineers and Technicians

Whilst much traffic design is carried out using industry standard software, the need for practitioners to have a robust understanding of sign design principles, the application of legal and statutory requirements conformity and legibility in design and the principles of safe siting and effective deployment strategy has never been greater. Amidst a litigation culture, poorly designed and installed road signs often form the basis of highways claims which, coupled with the aims of getting maximum performance from our road network for all user groups, place significant demands upon the traffic sign designer. This course provides delegates with the core knowledge of traffic sign design and application standards, from which specialisation in key signing disciplines can be developed.

    17.06.2010 North Wales HAUC Roadshow

All the HAUC Roadshows are open to anyone, are free to delegates and allow those who attend to achieve a day’s CPD for only the cost of travel.  Whilst the Roadshows are aimed particularly at highway maintenance professionals, those who are involved in other areas of highways and transportation (eg: design engineers, structural engineers, traffic engineers and transport planners) should gather useful information which will help them in doing their current jobs, as well as preparing them for the time when their careers take them to situations where they are responsible for maintenance staff.  Maintenance is a core issue for all involved in highways and transportation and, therefore, candidates may be asked general questions about maintenance when attending the interviews as part of a professional qualification (eg: CEng, IEng and TPP) – whatever their specialist discipline.
