This twice yearly IHIE course aims to develop practitioners' understanding of the principles and practicalities of traffic signing. The course provides guidance on the use of the current Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions (TSRGD), and the Traffic Signs Manual (TSM) Delegates will benefit from speakers presentations on using the TSRGD and TSM, with particular emphasis on the planning and detailed design of directional signs. Delegates attending this course will be expected to have some experience of sign design and specification, and be reasonably familiar with the existing Regulations.

Whilst much traffic design is carried out using industry standard software, the need for practitioners to have a robust understanding of sign design principles, the application of legal and statutory requirements conformity and legibility in design and the principles of safe siting and effective deployment strategy has never been greater. Amidst a litigation culture, poorly designed and installed road signs often form the basis of highways claims which, coupled with the aims of getting maximum performance from our road network for all user groups, place significant demands upon the traffic sign designer. This course provides delegates with the core knowledge of traffic sign design and application standards, from which specialisation in key signing disciplines can be developed.
